The Seed of Dream


A performance of “The Seed of Dream” will take place as part of the College Music Society “SuperRegional” Conference on Saturday, March, 29, 2008  (at 9:15 am)  in Kemp Hall on the campus of Illinois State University, Normal, IL.

The work will be performed by three assistant professors from Southern Illinois University Carbondale: baritone David Dillard, cellist Eric Lenz, and pianist Paul Transue.

David Dillard will also be speaking about the composition and presenting a “poster session” on the work.

The Premiere of “The Silver Swan”


The premiere of “The Silver Swan” will take place at a recital honoring Carol Kimball’s 36 years teaching at The University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Lori composed this piece for Carol and created two settings — one for mezzo-soprano and piano, and one for mezzo-soprano, flute and piano.

Both versions will premiere on March 29, 2008 at 7 pm at the UNLV Beam Music Center Doc Rando Recital Hall. (4505 Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas).  With mezzo-soprano Juline Gilmore, flutist Jennifer Grim, and Lori on the piano.

Four Dickinson Songs


Soprano Kelly Cuddeback, accompanied by Dr. Paul Jones, will be performing Lori’s “Four Dickinson Songs” on Tuesday , April 8th, 2008 at 7:30pm in Rock Hall on the Temple University campus (corner of Broad St. and Cecil B. Moore) —  and again on Friday April 11th at Atonement Lutheran Church on Wyomissing Blvd in Wyomissing (or Reading), PA. Also on the program are works by Handel, Mozart, Debussy, Wolf, Poulenc and Leibensperger.

3 Premieres at Bluffton University, Bluffton, OH


On February 10, 2008, the music faculty of Bluffton University presented a concert of Lori’s music. “On The Green Trail” with poetry by Mennonite poet Jeff Gundy, was premiered by soprano Michelle Latour and pianist Lucia Unrau. The newly revised “Captivity” was premiered by Michelle Latour and trumpeter Jeff Boehm; and saxophonist Adam Schattschneider and pianist Anna Stembler-Smith premiered “Journey”. The concert also included a performance of “Men with Small Heads” with baritone David Sawatzky and pianist Lucia Unrau; excerpts from “Living in the Body” with Michelle Latour and Adam Schattschneider, and “Nocturne” for solo piano, performed by Lucia Unrau. Poet Jeff Gundy presented several new poems inbetween the musical selections.

I Never Saw Another Butterfly


Soprano Barbara Nyce and saxophonist Samuel Lorber will be performing Lori’s “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” as part of the Suburban Music School Master Series. The concert will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at 3 pm at The Community Arts Center of Wallingford, in Wallingford, PA. The Seed of Dream


Cantor Pamela Schiffer, soprano, Cellist Nat Chaitkin and pianist Marie-France LeVebre will be performing "The Seed of Dream" on a Holocaust Memorial Program in East Lansing, Michigan. The performance will take place on Thursday May 1, 2008 at 7 pm at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.

The Seed of Dream


"The Seed of Dream" will be presented on April 29, 2008, at The Tolerance Center of the Vilna Gaon Jewish State Museum. More information about the center can be found here.

With Stein Skjervold, baritone; Rokas Zubovas, piano; and Mindaugas Backus,
(biographies below)

Stein Skjervold (f. 1973, Trondheim, Norway) has been hailed as a
"world-class baritone" by the international magazine Pianowereld and as a
"magnificent bariton" by the Norwegian newspaper Adresseavisen.

After university studies in Norwegian, Russian and political science,
Stein Skjervold began his singing studies at the Grieg Academy in Bergen
with prof. Harald Bjørkøy. He has also studied with prof. Elisabeth
Bengtsson-Opitz at the Academy of theatre and music in Hamburg, and has
his master from the Norwegian State Academy of music, where he studied
with prof. Barbro Marklund and prof. Håkan Hagegård. He has also
participated in numerous master classes with a.o. Oren Brown, Suzanna
Eken, Paul Kiesgen and Ingrid Bjoner.

Stein Skjervold has a repertory that spans church music, opera and lieder
and romances as well as contemporary music, and has held several solo
recitals in Norway and abroad during the last years. He is especially
devoted to the lied and song repertory, and emphasizes the text and the
story in the songs.

Stein Skjervold made his opera debut in 2002 as Guglielmo in Opera Island
Bornholm's critically acclaimed production of Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte,
conducted by Manfred Honeck and directed by Jonathan Miller. Since then,
he has sung numerous parts in Norwegian opera houses; Operaen i
Kristiansund, Den Norske Opera, Midtnorsk Musikkteater og Steinvikholm
Musikkteater.

Pianist Rokas Zubovas, a faculty member at the Piano Department of the
Lithuanian Academy of Music since 2000, for six years (1994-2000) taught
in the Music Department of Saint Xavier University in Chicago, Illinois.
Mr. Zubovas, a winner of the Frinna Awerbuch International Piano
Competition in New York and the M.K.. Ciurlionis International Piano
Competition in Vilnius, Lithuania, has appeared with recitals and at
various Festivals throughout the United States, Canada, Switzerland,
Norway, France, Italy, Greece, Lithuania, Russia, Bulgaria, and other
countries of Europe. The pianist also frequently performs with his wife,
pianist Sonata Deveikyt–Zubovien as a Duo Zubovas piano ensemble, and
as chamber musician with various soloists and chamber groups.

Mindaugas Backus (b. 1973) studied cello with Prof. R. Armonas at the
Lithuanian Academy of Music in 1991 – 1998. While at the Academy he played
in the World Youth Orchestra (1992), participated in the Festival of Youth
Chamber Ensembles and Orchestras in Murcia (Spain, 1993), attended master
classes for chamber ensembles and cello soloists in Sweden (1994);
together with D. Rubinas (double-bass) he had several recitals in
Lithuania and Germany (1995), participated in master classes for chamber
ensembles held by Jeunesses Musicales in Weikersheim, Germany (1996, with
Prof. Rudolf Gleissner and Prof. Henry Mayer). In 1998, Backus
participated in master classes for cello soloists in Holland
(International Holland Music Sessions), performed during open master
lessons held by David Geringas in Vilnius. In 2000, the cellist participated in the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, USA. There he performed together with such musicians as the pianists John O'Connor and Boris Berman, guitarist Eliot Fisk, and Tokyo and Vermeer string quartets. In 2001, as a member of the chamber orchestra Kremerata Baltica M. Backus toured Japan and South Korea.

The premiere of “And Music Shall Not End”


Lori will be joined by mezzo-soprano D’Anna Fortunato in presenting the premiere of her new song cycle “And Music Shall Not End.” The cycle was commissioned by the Lyrica Society to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the deaths of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, Jr. Lori set two brand new poems — “Partial Lunar Eclipse, Sept. 7, 2006” by Anne Ranasinghe and “A Pastoral Lament” by John Wood. The performance will be part of the Harvard-Lyrica Dialogues 2008, and will take place on April 18, 2008 from 4-6 pm at Dudley House at Harvard.

The premiere of “The Bloodjet”


Within an academic cross-discipline study of the life and poetry of Sylvia Plath, Mississippi State University's music department will present a vocal-chamber music recital on the Starkville campus, February 1, 2008.  In addition to song-settings by Ricky Ian Gordon, Juliana Hall, John Mitchell and Ned Rorem performed by students and faculty, soprano Eleanor McClellan will premiere Lori Laitman's “The Bloodjet,” a cycle commissioned by Dr. Adelaide Whitaker.  

Dimensions New Music Series


The first concert for the 2007-08 Dimensions Series will take place on November 5, 2007 at 7:30 pm in the Music/Mass Communication Building Concert Hall of Austin Peay University. The concert will feature the music of guest composer Lori Laitman. “Mystery” will be performed by mezzo-soprano Dr. Sharon Mabry and pianist Patsy Wade; “The Seed of Dream” will be performed by mezzo-soprano Lisa Conklin-Bishop, pianist Dr. Jeffrey Wood and cellist Keith Nicholas; and the premiere of Lori’s two William Carlos Williams songs —  “Full Moon” and “Light Hearted William” will be performed by tenor Dr. Thomas King and pianist Dr. Vicki King.

Becoming a Redwood in New Zealand


At 6 pm on November 8, 2007, at The Hunter Council Chamber of The New Zealand School of Music, Wellington, New Zealand, soprano Elise Gutshall and pianist Emma Sayers will be presenting a concert of art songs. The program will include Lori's "Becoming a Redwood," (poetry by Dana Gioia), as well as Libby Larsen's "Cowboy Songs," Richard Hundley's "Octaves and Sweet Sounds" and Ralph Vaughan Williams "Ten Blake Songs" for Voice and Oboe (with Rachel Cashmore, oboe).

I Never Saw Another Butterfly performance at Williams College

Soprano Carol Lines and saxophonist Griffin Campbell will be performing Lori's "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" on November 11, 2007 at 7 pm at Williams College in Williamstown, MA. The program is entitled "Music of the Holocaust" and other selections include "Hot-Sonate" by Erwin Schulhoff and "Two Songs" from Symphony No. 5 by Stephen Dankner.

Songs of Hope

Songs of Hope is a recital series which begins October, 2007 in New York City, and ends February, 2008, in Seattle. Soprano Janeanne Houston will be joined by organist/pianist Paul Richard Olson and oboist Shannon Spicciati in four exciting venues.

Janeanne will be singing three of Lori’s songs from her first song cycle: The Metropolitan Tower, A Winter Night and Old Tunes. Also featured is the world premiere of the song cycle Cummings’ Suite by North Carolina composer Dan Locklair. This newly comissioned work includes the beloved text I thank you God for most this amazing day. Also on the program are works by Carol Sams (NY premiere, and a world premiere for soprano, piano, and oboe), the NY premiere of Hilary Tann’s cycle Songs of the Cotton Grass for soprano and oboe, and songs from Simon Sargon and Bern Herbolsheimer. A new work titled Fragments, Songs of Hope, by Northwest composer Gregory Youtz will be the centerpiece of the final concert at Pacific Lutheran University.

Orange Afternoon Lover

On May 17, 2006, at Saint Bartholomew’s Church in NYC, soprano Eileen Strempel and pianist Sylvie Beaudette performed Lori’s song cycle, “Orange Afternoon Lover,” which sets the poetry of Margaret Atwood. The concert featured other Atwood settings commissioned by Strempel and Beaudette, by composers Libby Larsen, Amanda Harberg, Tania León, Elisenda Fábregas and Judith Cloud.

Becoming A Redwood

soprano, and Christopher Johnson, piano performed Lori's "Becoming a Redwood" in addition to songs by Berlioz, Poulenc, Messiaen, and Jonathan Bailey Holland.

March 21, 2007: NYC concert featured Lori's songs

Greenwich House Arts presented the fourth annual “Women’s Work” concerts, hosted by American composer Beth Anderson and produced by Greenwich House Arts. The performances took place on three Wednesdays in March: 14, 21 and 28, and featured recent chamber instrumental and vocal music by prominent living women composers from Asia, the U.S. and Europe.

On March 21 at 8 pm, at the Renee Weiler Concert Hall, 46 Barrow Street in NYC, mezzo-soprano Marcellina van der Grinten and pianist Jörg Ritter performed Lori’s “One or Two Things” and selections from “Mystery.” Other featured composers were Beth Anderson, Nancy Bloomer Deussen, Barbara Heller, Stefania de Kenessey,  Ljubica Mariç, Ruth Schontal, and Clara Schumann.

Lyric Fest of Philadelphia to feature Lori's songs

On Sunday April 15, 2007 at 3 pm at The First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Lyric Fest presented a concert centered around American Poets, and Lori’s music was included. Paul Sperry was the special guest and commentator.

Florida performances of The Seed of Dream

Lori has created a mezzo-soprano version of “The Seed of Dream” and two different groups performed the work this spring.

On Saturday April 28, 2007, “A Remembrance Concert” was presented as part of the opening reception to the Fragments Exhibit at The Leepa-Rattner Museum. The concert featured mezzo-soprano Theresa D’Auito, cellist Theresa Villani and Joseph Mechavich, piano, along with poet Richard Ilnicki. The concert included compositions composed by relatives of Holocaust survivors based on experiences recalled and verbalized by the survivors themselves.  Among the featured works were Laurence Sherr’s “Elegy and Vision,” Laitman’s “The Seed of Dream, Schanzer “A Mother’s Story,” and Ravel’s Deux Melodies Hebraiques.

Men with Small Heads

Performance in Washington, DC with baritone Andrew Garland and pianist Donna Loewy. The concert of living American composers features works by Paulus, Wood, Kohn and Laitman. November 12, 2006 at The Phillips Collection, 4 pm and November 15, 2006 (invitation only) at The Cosmos Club, 8 pm.

Lori and her music live at The Songs Across The Americas Festival

May 16-20, 2006 at The University of Central Arkansas.

There is a concert of Lori's music on May 16 at 8 pm, featuring "The Apple Orchard," "Being Happy," "On A Photograph," "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," "Men with Small Heads," and "Dreaming."

On May 18, 2006 at 11 a.m., there is a concert featuring Lori's music with selections from "Four Dickinson Songs," "Swimmers on The Shore," "Early Snow," "One or Two Things," and "I Am In Need of Music."

On May 20, 2006 at 8 pm, "Becoming A Redwood," will be featured with tenor Matt Newman and chamber ensemble, conducted by Norman Boehm.

The Lyra Chamber Ensemble of Washington will be performing Lori's "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" with soprano Susan Wheeler and bass clarinetist Pamela Helton. The performance will take place on Sunday, April 30 at 7 PM. at the Strathmore Mansion, 10701 Rockville Pike, North Bethesda MD. Jennifer Check if the recipient of the John Browning Memorial Prize, alumna of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, and winner of the Zarzuela Prize at Placido Domingo's 2003 Operalia Competition. I am in Need of Music

Lori's duet "I am in Need of Music," will be included in "A Musical and Theatrical Tribute to Elizabeth Bishop," taking place at the Martel Recital Hall at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, NY on Friday, October 28, 2005 at 8:00pm.

Bishop graduated from Vassar in 1934 and went on to establish herself as one of the foremost American poets of the 20th Century. The Academy Award nominated actress, Amy Irving, will present two extended scenes from a new one-woman play, "A Safe Harbor for Elizabeth Bishop" by Marta Goes. This play will open in New York, with Ms. Irving, in Spring 2006 at Primary Stages. Mezzo-soprano Mary Nessinger, pianist Thomas Sauer, and baritone Robert Osborne will present songs and duet settings of Bishop's poetry by a wide range of American composers - John Harbison, Lee Hoiby, William Bolcom, Chris DeBlasio, David Leisner, Richard Wilson,Lori Laitman, and the world premiere of five settingsby Ned Rorem.

Premiere of Five Lovers and Becoming a Redwood

Soprano Jāma Jandroković will premiere Lori’s “Five Lovers” (poems by Jāma Jandroković) and sing “Becoming A Redwood.” Poet Dana Gioia will read his poems prior to the performance. Sax and Soprano

“Lori Laitman: Sax and Soprano” will be presented by The Arden Duo” (Carolyn Bryan, saxophone from Georgia Southern University and Sandra McClain, soprano from the University of Virginia and Mary Baldwin College) at 10:30 am - 12:00 pm on March 19, 2004 at the Kresge Theater, Carnegie Mellon University. This lecture/recital is part of the Seventh Festival of Women Composers International presented by the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Dickinson Songs

On March 19, 2004 at 7 p.m. at CUNY Graduate Center, Elebash Recital Hall, 365, Fifth Avenue, NY, NY, mezzo-soprano Lynn Helding, pianist Jennifer Blyth and actress Karen Lordi will present “Emily Dickinson -- This is My Letter to the World.” The program features Dickinson’s poems in settings by William Bolcom, Aaron Copland, Jake Heggie, and Lori Laitman interspersed with dramatic readings of selected Dickinson letters. Concert of Lori's Music

A concert of Lori’s music will be presented at Levine School of Music on June 19th, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jane Lang Recital Hall. Soprano Lisa Shaw will sing “I Never Saw Another Butterfly,” “Days and Nights,” “Becoming A Redwood,” and other cycles. The concert is free and part of DC’s Fete de la Musique. I Never Saw Another Butterfly

"I Never Saw Another Butterfly" will be performed at "A Night of Jewish Theater Songs, Storytelling and Music from the Shtetl and Beyond" with soprano Malya Resnik Muth and saxophonist Kimm Stammen. Living in the Body

Saxophonist Carolyn Bryan and soprano Sandra McClain (The Arden Duo) will be performing “Living in the Body” at the 13th World Saxophone Congress on July 11, 2003 at 3 pm in Ultan Hall at the University of Minnesota. The cycle sets the poetry of American poet Joyce Sutphen.

Fathers

On April 27, 2003, Holocaust Remembrance Day, Music of Remembrance presented the world-premiere of Lori’s "Fathers" with Erich Parce, baritone, Jeannie Wells Yablonsky, violin, Amos Yang, cello and Mina Miller, piano. The performance took place at The Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, WA and Lori gave a pre-concert lecture on the poetry of Anne Ranasinghe. Lori also appeared live on KING-FM radio on April 25, 2003, with radio host George Shangrow.

I Never Saw Another Butterfly

On April 26, 2003 at 8 PM at CAMI Hall, 165 West 57th Street, NY, NY, soprano Anna Tonna and saxophonist Oscar Noriega will be performing Lori’s “I Never Saw Another Butterfly.” The concert will also feature soprano Dorothy Bishop, baritone Peter Clark, tenor William George, pianist Mitchell Cirker and guitarist Francisco Roldan performing works by Chris Berg, Ricky Ian Gordon, Elliot Carter, Richter, William George, Augusta Reed Thomas and Richard Gleaves. Tickets are $20.

Early Snow

On April 7, 2003, soprano Jennifer Check and pianist Craig Terry will be premiering Lori’s “Early Snow,” 3 settings of Mary Oliver poems. The recital is at 7 pm and will take place at The Daniel and Joanna S. Rose Rehearsal Studio at Juilliard on the 10th floor of the Rose Building. The Years

On April 5, 2003 at 2 pm in Bristol Chapel at Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ, Marguerite Scully, soprano and Eunjoo Chung, piano will be performing The Years by Lori Laitman. The recital will also feature the works of Colbran, Hensel and Chaminade.

Four Dickinson Songs

March 16, 2003, 3 pm, at the Kosciuszko Foundation, 15 East 65th Street. NY, NY. Mezzo-soprano Keri Alkema and pianist Douglas Fisher will be opening their Marilyn Horne Foundation recital with Lori’s "Four Dickinson Songs." Also featured on their all-American program are works by Thomas Pasatieri, Elinor Remick Warren, Dominick Argento and Leonard Bernstein. A broadcast of the concert will air on WQXR radio on Saturday, March 22 at 9:00 pm.

The Metropolitan Tower and Other Songs

I Never Saw Another Butterfly and Living in the Body

On March 27 at 7:30 PM in Francis Auditorium in the Pearce Science Center, Mary Baldwin College (Staunton, VA) will present a Women's History Month concert by the Arden Duo - soprano Sandra McClain and saxophonist Carolyn J. Bryan, and pianists Lise Keiter-Brotzman and Lynne Mackey. In addition to works for solo piano, the program will include Libby Larsen's Cowboy Songs, Katherine Murdock's Three Soliloquies, and two song cycles by Lori Laitman “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” and “Living in the Body."
