Jane Manning’s Vocal Repertoire for the Twenty-First Century, Volume 2

Jane Manning was described as the “life and soul of British contemporary music” — and her book about 21st century vocal repertoire examines a variety of songs. One chapter is devoted to my Men with Small Heads cycle, to Thomas Lux’s poetry. I am grateful for her insights into my music.

“IT is an unalloyed pleasure to come across the music of Lori Laitman, an exceptionally prolific songwriter who shows total mastery of the voice–piano idiom. Vocal fluency and rhythmic energy are her hallmarks and she sets (and chooses) texts admirably. The notes seem to leap out spontaneously from an ever-fertile wellspring of imagination and drive. Her ear is acute to the subtlest vocal nuances, and she establishes character with consummate ease, giving the singer every chance to display versatility, and to relish occasional unusual expressive effects, which always come off perfectly.”
