Residencies

I have visited several schools since 2002. In a typical residency, I will spend 2-3 days at a school, where I will give a talk about my compositional process, conduct a master class with the students, and coach faculty and students in preparation for a concert of my music. I have also been the Keynote Speaker at several events. If you are interested in having me visit your school or speak at your event, please contact me directly.

  • May 20, 2024: Lori to Present at The Fellowship Of The Song, Cincinnati Song Initiative

    Artistic Director Samuel Martin moderated a roundtable discussion at the The Fellowship of The Song, held at Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music: “Commissioning and Working with Composers“. Lori and colleagues Tom Cipullo and Shawn Okpebholo discussed their experiences of the commissioning process to help demystify the process.

  • October 12-14, 2023: Presenter at Tennessee State Chapter of NATS

    Lori was the Presenter at Tennessee State Chapter of Nats at Austin Peay University in Clarksville, TN from October 12-14, 2023.

  • April 21, 2024: Schmidt Vocal Arts Master Class

    3 talented young singers were chosen by the Schmidt Vocal Arts Foundation to participate in a Master Class online with Lori.

    Mezzo-soprano Megan Linnington, accompanied by Darryl Linnington, performed If I... Soprano Saige Hoffman, accompanied by JJ Bui, performed I’m Nobody and Will There Really Be A Morning. Baritone Hans Grunwald and pianist Joseph Stacy had to postpone due to illness but had a later private session with me on The Apple Orchard.

  • April 2-5, 2024: The Hartt School in conjunction with Cincinnati Song Initiative

    Cincinnati Song Initiative (CSI) joined forces with The Hartt School at The University of Hartford to create their first Festival of American Song, with a spotlight concert featuring Lori’s songs.

    Lori coached students and faculty in preparation for Paradise Rivers: The Songs of Lori Laitman, on April 4, 2024, and gave a Master Class on her songs on April 5, 2024.

  • March 7-10, 2024: Composer-In-Residence at Nazareth University’s Women in Music Festival

    From March 7-10, 2024, Lori served as the Composer-in-Residence for the Third Annual Women in Music Festival at Nazareth University in Rochester, NY. The festival was organized by Bonnie Choi.

    Lori gave master classes and coached performers for the Laitman concert given by students and faculty on March 8th, 2024. On March 10, 2024, The Greater Rochester Women’s Philharmonic, conducted by Nancy Strelau with mezzo-soprano soloist Katie Hannigan, performed Lori’s newly orchestrated Becoming a Redwood, and premiered Diana Rosenblum’s orchestrations of Lori’s Echo and The Ballad Singer in addition to a premiere of a movement from Diana’s Melodic Mazes.

  • March 18-20, 2022: Indianapolis Opera 

    After several Covid delays, The Indianapolis Opera, under General Director David Craig Starkey, presented an intriguing double bill, staging and combining my Vedem with Hans Krasa’s Brundibar. I wrote new music for the production, combining themes from Vedem and Brundibar. Matt Cooksey was the Director and Alfred Savia was the conductor. I was in attendance for rehearsals and performances.

  • January 31, 2022 to February 3, 2022: The University of Calgary in Canada

    I did a virtual residency, working with the students of Jennifer Szeto and collaborating with director Amanda Smith. The final production was a virtual concert of my music.

  • January 27-29, 2022: James Madison University residency

    My stay included a talk with Adina Langer, curator of the Holocaust exhibit Words, Music Memory as well as a recital with soprano Sheena Ramirez, who performed several of my Holocaust-themed song cycles. 

  • May 3-7, 2021: Peabody Institute – John Hopkins University

    I worked with the students at Peabody during the spring of 2021, culminating in a virtual presentation of my music.

  • March 22-27, 2021: Baylor Lyceum Guest 

    My appearance for the week was postponed due to the Coronavirus. New dates have not yet been set. 

  • Feb. 20, 2021: Musica Vitale — San Diego, CA

    The virtual master class, recital, and interview “Recital and Dialogue with Lori Laitman” aired on Facebook Live at 7 pm PST. 

  • February 8-13, 2021: University of Oklahoma

    My residency was postponed due to the Coronavirus. My residency took place the week of February 7, 2022, culminating in performances of The Scarlet Letter on February 10-13, 2022. 

  • December 18, 2020: The Eastman School of Music

    Virtual: Eastman Opera Theatre’s “Our Voices”, fall of 2020, with “I Shall Not Live in Vain,” a virtual presentation of my music.

  • March 9-15, 2020: UC Irvine

    My residency, which was to have culminated with a concert of my music and a production of The Scarlet Letter, was postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. UCI Opera, under the direction of Darryl Taylor, instead presented virtual highlights of The Scarlet Letter.

  • March 4-6, 2020: The University of Arkansas

    I was the guest composer and Keynote Speaker for the SHE Festival in Fayetteville, AR. I gave a talk about my process, coached students and faculty for a concert of my music, and did a master class on my songs. Then I headed home, already concerned about the Coronavirus, not knowing that the next few years would be spent in isolation!

  • November 19 and 21, 2019 and January 31, 2020: Guest Artist at George Mason University, Fairfax, VA

    At the invitation of Patricia Miller, I visited George Mason University twice, where I gave master classes and coached the students in preparation for a concert of my music.

  • NOVEMBER 6-9, 2019: Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky.

    I worked with young composers and voice students, and did a master class the evening of November 8, 2019.

  • April 2-4, 2019: Nazareth College

    Composer-in-Residence at Rochester, NY. Lori worked with the faculty and students and alumni in preparation for a concert of Lori’s music on April 4, 2019. She also gave a talk focusing on the genesis of her Holocaust-themed music and conducted master classes for the student singers and composers.

  • January 28 – February 2, 2019: The Hartt School

    Composer-in-Residence at, Hartford, CT. Lori worked with the young singers coaching them on their roles in THE THREE FEATHERS, ABRIDGED – which The Hartt Opera Theater premiered on January 31-Feb. 3, 2019. Lori also conducted a master class, worked with the young composers, and gave a talk about her creative process.

  • March 20-21, 2018: Utah State University

    Lori worked with the students and coached them for a performance of her songs the evening of March 21, 2018. On March 22, 2018, Lori also gave a Master Class at BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY in Provo, UT.

  • March 7, 2018: Towson University, Towson, MD

    Lori visited the school to present a talk on her creative process as part of the “Telling Your Story” series. Lori did a master class on her songs; but also worked with one of Towson’s young composers on her song.

  • March 3-5, 2017: Eastman School of Music

    Recipient of the EDDI grant, Lori worked with the students, coaching them for the March 5, 2017 premiere of her SATB Vocal Quartet and Piano four hands song cycle Are Women People? — which was commissioned by the Hanson Institute for American Music of the Eastman School of Music and the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women’s Leadership at the University of Rochester.

  • September 19-20, 2016: Birmingham-Southern College

    Lori worked with the students and faculty, talked about her process and helped coach a final recital of Lori’s works, featuring Jacqueline Leary-Warsaw and Kevin T. Chance, among others. 

  • April 9, 2016: University of Wyoming

    In Laramie, WY Lori gave a master class on her songs for NATS teachers and students from Colorado and Wyoming.

  • March 16, 2016: Georgetown University, Washington, DC

    Lori spoke to Joel Friedman’s Composition Seminar about writing for the voice.

  • February 5, 2016: Elizabethtown College, Elizabethtown, PA

    Lori worked with the students on her songs, gave a short talk, and and coached a performance of a student composition. 

  • January 23, 2016: University of Colorado

    Master Class at University of Colorado, Boulder, CO. 

  • January 22-25, 2016: Opera Colorado

    Lori worked with OPERA COLORADO’s Young Artists in preparation for their concert of American Art Song on January 24, 2016. She also coached them on The Scarlet Letter for their upcoming student matinee performance of the opera this May.

  • November 11-14, 2015: Salem College

    In Winston-Salem, North Carolina Lori worked with the students and faculty on her songs, and also gave a talk about her compositional process. The residency concluded with a concert of her songs.

  • April 28, 2015: Towson University

    In Towson, MD Lori gave a Master Class on her songs for the Voice Division of the Department of Music.

  • February 8-9, 2015: Longy School of Music, New England Conservatory and Boston Conservatory  

    Masterclasses for singers and composers in Boston, MA. POSTPONED DUE TO SNOW. The New England Conservatory Adult Division Masterclass was rescheduled for March 15, 2015 from 7-9 PM at Pierce Hall. Lori also spoke about her compositional process.

    Lori was a guest for Russell Miller’s class.

  • March 29-April 1 2014: Central Michigan University

    Lori was a guest Artist, culminating in a concert of Lori’s songs.

  • March 17-19, 2014: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

    Visiting Artist Residency for the Kenan Scholars. 

  • September 22, 2013: The University of Kansas

    Lori visited The School of Music at The University of Kansas, and then the Eastman School of Music, October 2, 2013 for the premieres of The Soul Fox, which wascommissioned by Reach Out Kansas, Inc. for soprano Julia Broxholm and pianist Russell Miller.

  • November 12, 2011: University of Southern California

    I gave a Master Class at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA.

  • April 25-29, 2011: Randolph College

    My residency at Randolph College in Lynchburg, VA included the premiere of my SSA piece, Chèvrefeuille, with the student chorus under the direction of Randall Speer.

  • March 16-18, 2011: San Diego State University

    I worked with the students at San Diego State University in San Diego, CA and my visit culminated with a concert of my songs.

  • February 8-10, 2011: Florida Gulf Coast University

    My residency at Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers, FL was thanks to an invitation by Jeanie Darnell, and included working with the students as they prepared for a recital of my music, and giving a Master Class.

  • November 3-5, 2010: Muhlenberg College

    Lori was in residence at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA, where she coached students on her music, and gave a lecture on her process.

  • October 22-29, 2010: St. Petersburg Conservatory

    Lori was the Distinguished Guest Composer of the St. Petersburg International Conservatory Week Festival, at the invitation of Lidia Volcheck (Assistant Professor of Piano Pedagogy at St. Petersburg Conservatory), and Russian-American pianist Vera Danchenko-Stern, a faculty member of The Peabody Institute and Founder and Artistic Director of The Russian Chamber Art Society.

  • September 29, 2010: Yale Institute for Sacred Music

    In New Haven, CT Lori spoke about her Holocaust oratorio Vedem, and performed selections with tenor James Taylor. 

  • June, 2010: Songfest Faculty

    I was on the SongFest Faculty in Malibu, CA during the summer of 2010. The New Triad for Collaborative Arts presented a retrospective of my music, underwritten by the Sorel Foundation. The concert included the premiere of The Act, setting H.L. Hix’s poem about circus knife throwers.

  • March 5-6, 2010: Vanats Spring Conference Clinician

    Lori was a Conference Clinician for the Virginia NATS (VANATS) 2010 Spring Conference in Richmond, VA.

  • October 27-30, 2009: Colorado College

    Lori was in residence at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO in October 2009.

  • October 10, 2009: Buckeye Nats Fall Meeting

    Lori gave a talk and a masterclass for the Buckeye NATS Fall Meeting in Cleveland, OH.

  • October 9, 2009: Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory

    Lori was in residence at Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory in Berea, OH.

  • October 8, 2009: Cleveland Institute of Music

    Lori was in residence at The Cleveland Institute of Music in Cleveland, OH.

  • April 1, 2009: The Pilgrim School

    Lori, along with poet David Mason, gave a presentation at The Pilgrim School in Los Angeles, CA.

  • March 2-3, 2009: Elon University

    Lori was in residence, along with poet David Mason, at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina.

  • April 4, 2008: Westminster Choir College

    Lori gave a Master Class on her songs, and a talk, at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ.

  • March 29-April 1, 2008: University of Nevada

    Lori was in residence at The University of Nevada in Las Vegas, NV.

  • February 9-11, 2008: Bluffton University

    Lori was in residence at Bluffton University in Bluffton, OH. The residency included the premiere of On The Green Trail, commissioned by Michelle Latour, using poetry by Mennonite poets.

  • November 4-6, 2007: Austin Peay University

    Lori was in residence at Austin Peay University in Clarksville, TN.

  • May 2, 2007: Towson State University

    Lori was in residence at Towson State University in Towson, MD and did a Master Class on her songs.

  • April 2-3, 2007: Longy School of Music

    Lori was in residence at The Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA, where she gave a talk on her process and a Master Class on her songs.

  • May 15-20, 2006: Songs Across the Americas Festival

    UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL ARKANSAS, Conway, AR. Lori and Richard Hundley represented the US in the Songs Across the Americas Festival. Other featured composers were Irma Urteaga of Argentina, Juan Orrego-Salas of Chile, Eduardo Gilardoni or Uruguay, and several Arkansas composers, including Robert Boury. 

  • March 2005: Murray State University

    In Murray, Kentucky Lori was the Keynote Speaker at the 2005 Athena Festival. 

  • March 2-5, 2002: Georgia Southern University

    Along with poet Joyce Sutphen, Lori was in residence at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. The residency included the premiere of Living in the Body.
