The clarinet version was commissioned by Sing for Hope in 2014. If I… is the last of my Four Dickinson Songs, and it was written as an 80th birthday present for my father (who lived to be almost 100). In order to balance the song as a stand-alone piece, I added additional measures to the original. I later created other versions (see above).

The premiere recording is on An Aids Quilt Songbook: Sing for Hope, with baritone Randall Scarlata, clarinetist Anthony McGill and pianist/composer Lori Laitman.

I was very honored to learn that Anthony McGill, Randall Scarlata and Cynthia Raim performed this work on Benita Valente’s Celebration of Life on September 2, 2026.
